Creating the perfect crisis box

When you are having a hard time with your mental health, it can be really challenging to get motivated to do anything at all, let alone find something that will soothe, distract, or otherwise make you feel a little better. Last year I came across something known as a crisis box, which is basically a box filled with fun, helpful, and comforting things that can help us weather the storm of our emotions.

There aren’t any specific rules about how to make them, as my crisis box would look completely different to yours, the things that are comforting and meaningful to one person might not be for the other. However, if you need some guidance on where to begin with a crisis box, you could include:

A comforter:

This is something that soothes us, such as fluffy socks, hand warmers, a perfume we like the smell of or even our favourite bar of chocolate.

Distractions:

This could be something like a book or magazine, or many people enjoy mindful colouring or puzzles. Just be sure to include some pencil crayons or pens too, because you won’t want to have to rummage around for those if you’re not feeling at you best.

Reminders:

Creating reminders for yourself that can help you deal with how you are currently feeling is a brilliant idea for a crisis box, this can be quote cards your purchase online or simply post-it notes that you write little affirmations on such as “you are enough”, “its Ok to not be ok”, “you will get through this”.
