What actually is self-care?

I realised that I’ve been harping on about self-love and self-care, but I haven’t actually defined what I mean by self-care. Self-care can look different to everyone, but to make it easier to know where to begin with your self-care routine. There are 7 different types of self-care, I will do a breakdown of the different categories.

Physical:

This is probably the form of self-care that most people are familiar with. It’s about making sure you are drinking enough, eating enough, getting enough sleep and exercise. But it is also listening to your body and not pushing through if you are feeling sick, attending the doctors or dentist if you need to, it’s about having a healthy and accepting attitude towards your body.

Emotional:

This can be a much more difficult form of self-care to tackle, this is about how we manage our emotions. Having the ability to deal with your emotions in a healthy way is crucial to your happiness and your quality of life. It’s asking yourself questions like when you feel an unpleasant emotion like jealousy, shame, embarrassment – how do you deal with it? Do you beat yourself up over it? Do you blame yourself for being too weak or sensitive when you let things get to you?

If you feel like your emotions control a lot of how you live your life then focusing on emotional self-care can be really useful.

Social:

Social self-care about being able to prioritise time to things that socially fulfil you. Such as our hobbies, dating, days out or nights in with family and friends. Who you surround yourself with has a huge impact on how you feel about yourself. Sometimes we can commit to things that we don’t really like or want to do which is not healthy and part of social self-care is to be able to say no to plans, places and people who drain us.

Spiritual:

This type of self-care involves taking time out to connect with yourself, you can do things such as yoga, meditation, having alone time, journaling, etc. In my opinion this is one of the most important forms of self-care, as this type of self-care helps you to really be in tune with yourself which will help you in recognising what types of self-care activities help you and more importantly when you need to take a break.

Personal:

Personal self-care is the practice of prioritising yourself. It is so easy to get caught up in putting everyone else first and ensuring that their needs are met, especially when you are a parent, I am definitely guilty of this! Tapping into your personal self-care is about letting go of the things that you were taught to believe as a child and finding your own path. It’s about discovering what you like to do and who you are when no one else is around.

Space:

I am a firm believer that the environment around you directly impacts your mental health, your self-esteem and your motivation. This form of self-care is about safety, security and creating an organised space that promotes your mental wellbeing. I will be doing a blog post on creating a mental health friendly environment that will give you some tips on how you can make where you live and work places that harness productivity and self-love.

Work:

We spend so much of our time at work, which is why I feel that it's important we dedicate an entire category to self-care at work. This can be things such as taking meaningful breaks away from our desks or work environment, if you work in an office, go for a walk outside. It can also be creating a good work and home life balance, by managing your time efficiently and creating time to do things that are important to you and help you recharge your batteries.

I hope that this has helped you understand self-care and self-love a little bit more. Give the gift of self-care to yourself or someone else by checking out my pampering gift boxes available to order on my Instagram.
